What I’ve learnt from the wildebeest migration in the River crossings in Africa
For those who wanted to start a business, here’s a lesson you may have heard before but never take it seriously.
When I ask myself how much do I want to make — the business fails and never really make much money.
When I ask myself why would I need to do this (business), I made it through the darkest time and I stand back up after failures until the business is successful.
We need a reason beyond money.
A strong reason has to be as strong as the wildebeest migration in the River crossings in Africa — something that pushes the wildebeest to cross the river.
In fact, I always consider the line between the left and right quadrant a river that is full of dangers and risks, but once crossed, we can get to the promised land with sweeter milk and honey.
The wildebeest migration is considered to be one of the great natural wonders of the world. Some even refer to it as “The Greatest Show on Earth”. The journey is about 800km long and treacherous especially for newborns, the vulnerable and weak. The migrating animals have to deal with both resident and migrating predators (crocodiles, lions, hyenas, cheetahs and leopards).
A key part of the wildebeest migration is the River crossings.
These river crossings occur in the Grumeti (Serengeti) and Mara (Tanzania and Kenya) rivers.
As they attempt to cross these rivers, huge crocodiles Great Wildebeest Migration in Africa would wait patiently to grab and drag them to the bottom of the river using their strong jaws.
Despite the risks and dangers, the wildebeest still continue with the migration — of course they try their best to find the right time and where the predators seem busy, but it is still a life-changing event for them.
What causes this great Migration in East Africa? What is the strong reason that pushes them to cross the river given that they have food where they are?
Researchers still struggle to explain what exactly causes the great migration in Africa.
However, we now know that it’s all about the instinct to survive.
Wildebeest and other herbivores cannot survive without rain.
Without rain, the quality of the grass reduces and this could lead to starvation for the herd.
By following the rains, the wildebeest know that they will always have plenty of water and grass.
So while they have food now, they want more and better grass.
Like human, we could have money and security as “E” and “S”, but if we want more, like financial freedom, we need to cross the river.
And unlike the animals, we need to have a strong enough personal reason to force us to make the crossings — it’s not embedded in our DNAs to cross. Indeed, the traditional schools and most of the families prepares us to stay in the “E” and “S”, which makes it even more difficult emotionally to make the crossing.
Now what’s your reason that pushes you to bear anything to make the crossing?
