Learning how to code, learning a new language, learning digital marketing, learning communication skill.... ?
What is the underlying skill that is the common factor of all of these "money making skills" that would expose us to more opportunities, to change to a more lucrative career, to get a promotion, to grow the business to the next level?
The ans:
Learning how to learn
I recently watched a YouTube video about a guy who learn how to code in four months from a Complete beginner and being able to find a job as a web app engineer .
He was making a few thousand dollars unstable income in sales positions. And now, with the new skill of coding. He is able to make $50000 as a trainee full stack engineer. And his salary will increase to $65000 after 4 months of probation.
Well on the surface, the huge jump in income is due to learning how to code. Yet when this guy shared his journey of learning how to code. The real secret reveals.
The first thing that he did was going to Google and search on "how to code" . And a lot of results came up.
He tried a bunch of websites and apps that is Free for people to learn coding and after 1 month , he was actually making very little progress.
He found himself sitting behind the computer for hours without really knowing what he has learned.
At that time, he has already quit his job to learn how to code full time. So he has no income. There is an urgency for him to learn as fast as possible.
So what he did was taking a step back and look for "learning how to learn".
He spent a week on learning how to learn. And after the things really changed, it was as if he was sitting on a rocket and his speed of learning how to code just accelerated so much that he was able to get a certificate from a coding website within a month.
And just another month later, he was able to work on a full stack coding projects on his own.
In total, he spent four full months learning full time before he start finding a job in as full stack engineer:
Month 1 he wasn't sure what he's doing
Month 2 he learned how to learn
Month 3 he passed all the coding classes and get a certificate
Month 4 he is able to code and complete a full stack project on his own
He sent 17 job applications and finally landed a job offer of $50,000 during probation and $65000 post probation.
What happened? Why did his learning process suddenly speed up so quickly?
The shift happens when he learned how to learn.
It is the common factor and the underlying most profitable skill under all the various money making skills that one could learn.
If anyone who want to change career can learn how to learn. We can open ourselves to a lot more opportunities.
A girl sitting next to me in the co working space is a tax consultant. And she her income is 3x more than her same age counterparts.
Why???
Because she took three months to learn a new tax code.
The New tax code (as the name suggests) is new, and so not many people in the industry knows exactly how to calculate that.
It will have an impact on the corporate tax payable. So the big corporations are all fighting and competing to hire tax consultants who know how to calculate the new tax code.
She is being paid handsomely for all the projects that she's taking on, because she knows how to learn in a way that makes money.
One who drag and learn for a long time (90% of population) will never be able to compete with the Profitable Learner who learns with strategies and techniques that enable them to move ahead by learning much more efficiently and effectively without getting overwhelmed.
Just imagine:
Knowing how to learn, and making 3x the income than your counterparts, or changing career that gives you 5x salary - doesn’t matter which Industry you are in, doesn’t matter what you are going to learn, its a universally applicable skill that will enable you to make more money everywhere you go.
The world is paying a ransom for talents who can learn fast, because the world is moving fast.
Its not so much about what you know that the other guys or gals don't anymore, the era of information inequality has passed.
Now its about the speed of acquisition and application of information in providing more value.
And that, is what learning how to learn is all about.
