Solopreneur’s 1 Million Journey: Crafting a Company of One

Hi Medium fam,

Today, we’re diving into the waters of solo entrepreneurship with “Company of One,” a book that’s changing the way we think about doing business.

If you’ve ever dreamt of crafting a company that’s truly your own, one that’s sustainable, enjoyable, and yes, profitable, then this is for you.

This is one of the books we will discuss and dive into in the yearly mastermind business stream. This article gives you a taste of what it’s like to be in the insider group.

For the purpose of this article, we’ll delve into:

Part 1: A quick high level summary

Part 2: 4 criterias for a successful, sustainable “company of one”

Part 3: exploring the idea keeping a focused but highly profitable business working part time

Let’s lace up our boots and march to the beat of a different drum — the rhythm of a business that’s intentionally small, fiercely independent and profitable, and authentically you.

Part 1

The Awakening — Refusing the Hustle

I still remember the days where I worked 12–16 hours in my business during my early days.

Hustle was the buzzword in the entrepreneur world that seemed to be a glory.

Plus, traditionally hard work is deemed as a good virtue.

But somehow, there’s a whisper growing louder by the day — a whisper that says, “it’s not sustainable” and “You can do business differently.” “It’s your business, you get to set the rules.”

The philosophy of the book “Company of One” is all about rejecting the pressure to grow for the sake of growth.

It’s about turning down the noise of more employees, more costs, and more stress, all while increasing your revenue, enhancing your joy, and boosting customer loyalty, while staying small (practically a solopreneur or with a remote team).

Think about it like this: A “Company of One” is a business model of low-risk entrepreneurship, a way of doing business that’s applicable to the full time employee with an entrepreneurial spirit and any small business owner looking to maintain their autonomy.

Part 2:

The Transformation — From Freelancer (Working Full Time in the Business and Creating a Job for Yourself) to REAL Business Owner

If you’ve ever been a freelancer or trying to start a business working for your own, you know the drill: you trade your time for money.

Whether you bill by the hour or by project, the buck stops when the work stops.

But a “Company of One” suggests something different. It’s about building a business that operates outside of one-on-one relationships, a business that can thrive without your constant, direct involvement.

Let’s take a look at the definition A “Company of One” thrives on four key characteristics:

adaptability, autonomy, speed, and simplicity.

  1. Adaptability

Adaptability is about meeting market changes and challenges head-on, using what you have to work with, rather than throwing more resources at the problem.

Working smarter and not harder is what I practice and teach in the Epic 12 execution system (a program which is sold for $4997 in Aug, that will be included in the yearly mastermind — business stream at a NO-BRAINER price — check it out here)

2. Autonomy

To achieve control over a “solo business” requires not only the core skills you learned in the enterprise you serve,

but also proficiency in sales, marketing, turning your knowledge to cash, customer relationship and retention, etc. (all of these essential skills covered in the yearly mastermind — business stream at a NO-BRAINER price — take action now or will definitely regret it when price goes up)

Essentially, this explains why many employees turned entrepreneurs fail with their business -

Most ordinary employees may only focus on the cultivation of one skill, but a “company of one” must be a generalist.

3. Speed

Speed is about efficiency, about getting things done efficiency (but also effectively**) so you have time for the other things that matter.

** if you’re not doing the right thing, no matter how fast you did it, it doesn’t matter much.

4. Simplicity

Simplicity is about staying focused on solving one customer’s problem at a time, without getting bogged down in automation or infrastructure. For those of you who follow me for a longer time may know, my business framework is “simplified, sustainable, soulful” (3S).

Simplicity, especially, will be the focus of my business practice in 2025.

Simplicity is soooo important because what I found from almost 10 years in business is that you don’t need to know a lot (in fact, there is too much noise around) , there are a couple key concepts that you need, and I’ve simplified it for you.

The key is to truly understand key concepts deeply, practice and apply, not to overwhelm or over-burden you with information. “

Knowing is one thing, doing is another. There is always a distance between knowing and doing that is beyond everyone’s imagination.” — Connie, Simplified Business Coach

And simplicity is how we can most easily bridge the gap.

Part 3

The key to a successful “Company of One” is not asking “How do I make my business bigger?” but “How do I make my business better?”

It’s about creating scalable business systems that can scale without scaling up your team or your overhead.

It’s about going deep and not going wide.

Whether it’s through email marketing or other forms of communication, the “Company of One” relies on systems that allow them to connect with a larger audience without direct, personal interaction.

It’s about leveraging technology to reach more people, to build trust, and to profit without the need for a large team.

Take Shawn, for example, who easily meets his annual profit goals WITHOUT relentless marketing but by focusing on his existing customer base.

His clients grow slowly but steadily, often referring him to new clients.

He prioritizes his current clients, understanding that their satisfaction and loyalty are the keys to his business’s success.

A real successful and sustainable business can operate without marketing!

Does that sound surprising to you?

In the end, “Company of One” is about more than just business.

The book suggests that it’s also about creating a legacy, a business that stands the test of time, that serves its customers well, and that brings you joy.

It’s about focusing on what’s essential, on creating space in your life for creativity and strategic thinking.

Creating space is super, super important if you want to be in business.

Why do most people fail to increase their money significantly?

Because they are too busy!

The lack of mental space is one big killing reason that people lack the energy and time to think — without thinking we could easily get lost in distractions and miscellaneous matters.

Before we realise it, we could be spending hours on working, but not actually achieving anything.

So, my fellow entrepreneurs, this is a book that I would recommend if we want to have a part time 6- figure business, which is the theme of our yearly mastermind — business stream for 2025.

A business that could allow us to work from home, cafe, or anywhere, with technology and a remote team, making potentially $1 million a year without hustling for 12–16 hours day.

This is one of the books we will discuss and dive into in the yearly mastermind business stream.

If you’d like to check out more details about what you can learn / get from the yearly mastermind — business stream, can do it here.

it’s up now for an incredible no-brainer price now given the previous Epic 12 execution system launch is $4997, and this yearly mastermind contains 10 times more materials and time and efforts, but at less than 1/10 of the price.

Fancy some business accompany + edu in 2025?

To your success,

Connie
