Many of us have stood at the crossroads of ambition and disappointment, clutching a list of unachieved goals and wondering where we went wrong. (Is this you? It was definitely Me!)

We might point to a lack of time, an abundance of obstacles, lack of knowledge, not having the right strategy or even a shortage of ability.

But the real reason you haven’t achieved your goals yet is more nuanced and surprising than you might think.

In this article, I will reveal what goes wrong and the real reason why so many goals remain unachieved. (Stats: only less than 6% of the population actually achieve their set goals).

Part 1:

The surprising reason many of us haven’t achieved our goals yet is an emotional disconnect.

We set goals with our minds but fail to connect with them on a deeper, emotional level.

We set goals because we see others making 6 figures in their business, and we wanted to do the same, without realising whether this is really what we want or understanding why we want it. It’s just a general, vague feeling that “it’d be good if I have it too”.

In other words, it’s more as an interest, rather than a commitment.

I shared more about commitment and other mindset pillars behind effective execution that gets results in this livestream:

Interest is the spark that initiates our journey towards a goal, but it is commitment that sees us through to the end. The difference between the two is vast, with interest being fleeting and easily swayed, while commitment is enduring and resilient.

Think of someone who starts a new business out of interest in the income potential they’ve seen in others. The initial excitement is palpable, but as challenges arise, the lack of deep emotional investment becomes apparent, leading to a gradual loss of motivation.

Success stories have a magnetic pull, but they can also set unrealistic expectations and inspire goals that are not genuinely aligned with our values or desires.

E.g. a friend of mine becomes enamored with the lifestyle of an influencer, seeing the glamour and wealth. They set a goal to achieve the same without considering whether this path aligns with their personality, skills, or long-term aspirations.

To bridge the emotional gap, we must first identify what we genuinely desire, beyond the superficial allure of someone else’s success, which takes:

  1. Self-Reflection: Spend time introspecting to understand what truly excites and motivates you.
  2. Value Alignment: Ensure your goals align with your core values and beliefs.
  3. Passion Identification: Discover activities that you are passionate about and consider how they might translate into goals.

Comparing ourselves to others can lead to setting goals for the wrong reasons, driven by envy or a perceived need to keep up with others.

Authenticity in goal setting is paramount. Goals should be a true reflection of who we are and what we want, not a reflection of someone else’s success.

This lack of emotional resonance means our goals don’t motivate us with the same power that a personally meaningful pursuit would.

Part 2:

Let’s dive a little deeper into the power of emotional connection

When we feel a strong, positive emotion toward our goals, we’re more likely to persist through challenges and setbacks. This emotional connection is the fuel that keeps us going when logic and willpower falter. (Basically routing around the logical brain lol).

We’ve seen stories of passionate entrepreneur who faces numerous obstacles in their quest to launch a new product. It was their deep-seated excitement and belief in the product’s potential keep them forging ahead, even in the face of adversity.

So the question becomes how we can be emotionally connected?

A vivid, inspiring vision of our goal’s achievement can create an emotional connection that propels us toward success. This vision acts as a beacon, guiding us through the fog of doubt and uncertainty.

Epic 12 execution system also starts with a vision.

Having a clear picture of success (whatever that means to us personally), which evokes a sense of satisfaction and responsibility. This emotional bond with one’s potential drives us to make tough decisions and lead with unwavering commitment.

Sounds good, but how to apply? How to do it? Well, here’s how I crafting an Emotionally Resonant Vision, we must use evocative imagery, sensory details, and personal significance.

  1. Visualize: Close your eyes and imagine achieving your goal. What do you see?
  2. Feel: What emotions do you experience as you envision this success?
  3. Detail: What are the specific, sensory details that make this vision come alive?

Part 3:

After having an emotionally connected vision, we’ve already win half the war. Next, we need the Small, Achievable Milestones to aid and help guide our way in the process of execution.

The next surprising reason people don’t achieve their goals is the lack of small, achievable milestones along the way. These mini-victories are crucial for maintaining emotional engagement and motivation.

Because each progress accomplishment boosts our confidence and excitement, making the larger goal feel more attainable.

Many people set the goals and then forget about it, hoping that one day they will magically become a reality. The wait is going to last a lifetime most likely.

Having a process system is super important, without which we don’t have feedback, we don’t know what’s working, what’s not, without which we’re throwing spaghetti on the wall and testing which sticks — which is extremely ineffective. The slow growth and no or little results are not going to sustain our commitment. Plus the lack of deadline to most goals causes procrastination and slowly but surely, the goals fall off and were forgotten.

Accountability play a key role in getting out of the cycle.

When we’re accountable to our emotionally connected goals, we’re more likely to feel emotionally invested in our goals and to follow through.

What’s more, positive reinforcement, such as rewards for achieving milestones or progress, can also strengthen the emotional connection to our goals. This reinforcement can make the pursuit of goals feel more like a joyful journey than a grueling task.

Simple things like rewarding ourselves with a special treat or our favourite snacks would make the process of selling more enjoyable. The anticipation of the reward adds an emotional layer to our goal pursuit.

In conclusion, the surprising reason you haven’t achieved your goals yet may not be what you think — It’s not necessarily a lack of ability or time or strategy or knowledge; it’s often an emotional disconnect.

By crafting a vision that resonates on an emotional level, setting small but meaningful milestones, establishing accountability, incorporating positive reinforcement, you can strengthen your emotional bond with your goals. This connection is the secret sauce that can propel you toward success, turning your ambitions from distant dreams into tangible realities.
