How to generate endless social media content? (+1 min social media content plan)
In this article, I am going to break down and share what I am doing to generate endless social media content:
(i) 1 condition for having endless content
(ii) 3 reasons why generating content is natural (and in fact essential to learning)
(iii) 3 questions to form a simple and practical content plan in 1 minute
Part 1:
There is but one condition to generate endless social media content: that you love learning.
I see social media content is natural output of my learning process. As long as I never stop learning, I will never stop outputting. As long as you keep learning, there will be unlimited ideas and learnings to share with your audience.
My definition of output is: original content I create to share and teach what I have learnt, regardless of the format and medium (could be written, audio, video or graphics).
Part 2:
Here are 3 reasons why output is critical and essential in the learning process:
Without application, information input without usage or applicator is not knowledge. The value of action and application, being a vital and often overlooked and procrastinated step in learning, is threefold -
(1) feedback loop
Without action or application of capability as output, we would only input the information. After processing the information and forming our own knowledge, we do not know if the knowledge is good or not because there is no feedback loop. When we take exams at school, we have a clear feedback (i.e. the marks we get). When we learn after school, action and application is the feedback mechanism that will tell us whether the knowledge is valid or not, how well we learn, what we need to improve upon.
(2) memory enhancement
Action and application has immense effect on our memory. According to the learning pyramid study, if you only read, listen or watch, the learning retention rate is only 10% — 30% of the information. On the other hand, if you apply what you have learnt and teach others, the learning retention rate can be as high as 75% — 90%.
Therefore, without output (whether it be sharing what you learn or teaching others), we may forget what we have learnt in just a week or a few weeks. So outputting is the final step of forming our knowledge system to ensure that the knowledge sticks with us so that we are able to apply it to obtain result.
(3) deliberate practice for improvement and mastery
Taking action and applying the capability learnt is how we can deliberately practice the capability for improvement and mastery. What is deliberate practice? Deliberate practice is a highly structured activity, the explicit goal of which is to improve performance. Specific tasks are invented to overcome weaknesses, and performance is carefully monitored to provide cues for ways to improve it further.
Application of capability should be structured activity (i.e. clear and specific) with the explicit goal to improve performance, and we should carefully monitor the performance to provide cues for ways to improve it further.
In effect, if we do not output after we learn (i.e. input), it is like we only eat and never dispose of the waste (horrible I know but it is the same principle).
Part 3:
Here is how I create my own content plan — by asking 3 questions.
3 questions to form a simple and practical content plan:
1) What specifically would we output and create as application of capability?
Options:
- written
- graphics
- audio
- video
2) What is the frequency of such output?
Options:
- daily
- biweekly
- every other day
- twice a week
- once a month
etc.
3) Where we will showcase and share these output?
Options:
- Social media platform (specifically where)
- self developed website or blog (specifically where)
- publication (specifically where)
- other people’s websites (specifically where)
My output is written + daily + social media platform (Medium + IG).
The combination of these 3 questions will serve as a clear practical action plan for social media content sharing.
To recap:
- As long as we are learning, we should be sharing. The more you learn, the more content you should be producing.
- Because 1) we need a feedback loop to tell us how well or how bad we learn, 2) we need to create content as an opportunity to revisit the knowledge and enhance our memory, 3) creating the content itself is a deliberate practice which can help us master the relevant skill. That in turn will generate limitless social media content.
- We can come up with a social media content plan in just 1 minute by asking 3 questions that will determine our actions.
That’s the end of my sharing this time, hope you benefit from it. See you in the next article!
